Dear President Jackson:
I am writing as artist, writer, publisher, and resident of the Hudson Valley to request that the exhibition in the gallery of the Arts Department by Wafaa Bilal, currently artist-in-residence at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, be reopened. I have not seen the show, nor heard your specific reasons for closing it down, but from the evidence I have read, it is highly questionable. For many of us it is clear that the greatest threat we face at present here in America is the loss of our basic rights as individuals, foremost amongst them being the right of free speech. It would be difficult, on the scale of things now, to justify putting that severely threatened human right further at risk.
